Intraocular Lens Implants

Click on the Cataracts links to learn about our exciting IOL options!

This type of intraocular lens, also known as a single vision or monofocal IOL, provides clear vision at one set focal length at distance or near. The distance lenses can provide excellent vision when driving or going to a ballgame, while the near vision lenses can provide good vision for reading or sewing. Unless one eye is set for distance vision and one set for near (monovision), you will probably need glasses for reading or other close-up activities.

Monovision allows you to see up close with one eye while seeing clearly at a distance with the other eye. The part of the brain related to vision tends to filter out the image from the eye that is not in clear focus. If you choose monovision you eventually do not pay attention to the eye that is not as clearly focused. Many people who wear monovision contact lenses like this arrangement. It allows them good vision both near and distance without the hassles of corrective lenses. However, monovision is not for everyone and does take some time to adjust. Also, monovision does not correct vision as sharply as having both eyes corrected to the same focus. Monovision is best suited for people who have a strong preference not to wear corrective lenses such as reading glasses. We highly suggest you try the monovision contact lenses for a few weeks to see if monovision is right for you.

If you have astigmatism (blurred or distorted vision caused by an oblong-shaped cornea) and need cataract surgery there is now an option to remove your cataract and treat your astigmatism at the same time! The Toric intraocular lens (IOL) has a unique design that offsets the imbalance of corneal astigmatism. This will allow you to see better at a distance or near without glasses when compared to a traditional monofocal IOL.

The Toric lens is a foldable, single-piece IOL that is made of the same biocompatible lens material that has been successfully implanted since 1991. This lens has a uniquely designed surface that helps reduce or eliminate astigmatism in your eye.

Clinical studies have shown that 97% of patients who had a Toric lens implanted in both eyes achieved freedom from glasses for their distance vision while only 50% of the control group who received a traditional IOL for distance vision achieved the same result.

The actual procedure to implant the Toric lens is similar to traditional small-incision cataract surgery. Our doctors use the “no needles, no stitch, no patch” surgery technique, so you are relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure. It takes only a few minutes and is performed in an outpatient facility.

As with all technological breakthroughs, the Toric lens will work better for some patients than others. As always, a comprehensive pre-surgical evaluation is necessary before determining which lens implant will be right for you. Then, in the expert hands of our accomplished surgeons, you can clearly discover the future of your vision.

Multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implants represent a significant advancement in cataract and refractive surgery, offering patients a broader range of vision without dependence on glasses or contact lenses. These premium lenses are designed to provide clear vision at multiple distances—near, intermediate, and far—greatly enhancing quality of life and daily function. Patients often experience increased freedom and convenience, particularly for activities like reading, driving, and using digital devices. Our center utilizes the latest generation of multifocal IOLs, including PanOptix, Synergy, Odyssey, and Symphony, tailored to individual visual needs, and supported by precise diagnostics and surgical expertise, ensuring optimal outcomes and high patient satisfaction.
