Announcing Our New Optometric Residency Program

Bennett & Bloom Eye Centers is proud to announce its Optometric Residency Program in ocular disease, affiliated with Indiana University School of Optometry. This will be only one of two such programs offered in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Beginning on July 1, 2006 we were especially excited to have Joshua Conner as our first resident.

"For years our interns have been saying how much they've learned here and how much we have to offer in teaching about ocular disease," said Dr. Lee Peplinski, the residency program coordinator. "So, as a group, the docs decided we should listen to their comments and start a residency program. This expansion of our mission of support and education for optometry is a natural extension for our practice."

Our optometric residency is an intensive, office-based program that provides an extensive anterior and posterior segment ocular disease diagnosis and management experience. Each resident will spend time caring for patients with all aspects of eye disease including retinal diseases, glaucoma, uveitis, external and anterior segment diseases as well as pre- and post-surgical cataract and refractive surgery care. Residents will gain clinical knowledge including hands-on experience with all of the state-of-the-art equipment available at our offices.

Joshua Conner did a 3 month optometric internship with Bennett & Bloom Eye Centers last summer. Dr. Conner graduated from Indiana University School of Optometry in May, and just a few months ago had a different post-graduation plan. ".I would graduate next May, accept a job in private practice in Crete, Nebraska, root for the Nebraska Corn Huskers on game day, and live happily ever after..However, somewhere between the twentieth and fortieth patient on my first day in Louisville I fell in love for the first time with the challenges of ocular disease."

In his role as an assistant instructor at Indiana University in Diagnostic Procedures, Dr. Conner became familiar with clinical teaching and looks forward to helping guide interns who rotate through our practice. In addition to utilizing his teaching skills, he looks forward to expanding his own education and, "the possibility of working in a multidisciplinary environment where I can learn to bring together optometric and ophthalmologic eye care to provide the finest patient care."
