No Stitch, Small Incision Vitrectomy Surgery

Keeping in our tradition of minimally invasive surgery, Drs. Steven Bloom and Inder Singal are proud to offer the new, state-of-the-art, ACCURUS 25-Gauge System for many of our patients requiring vitreoretinal surgery.

Vitrectomy surgery, pioneered over 30 years ago, involves the placement of small, 20-gauge incisions through the eye wall. Various instruments are inserted through these openings, allowing us to remove blood, scar tissue, and repair retinal detachment. Various previously untreated diseases are now routinely repaired utilizing vitrectomy surgery, including diabetic retinopathy, macular pucker, macular holes, vitreous floaters, and retinal detachment. Standard vitrectomy incisions, although still microscopic, require sutures. These often cause eye irritation and blurriness which can last several months.

The ACCURUS 25-Gauge System allows us to use sutureless, self-sealing incisions. This greatly reduces the operative time, dramatically reduces post-operative discomfort, and accelerates post-operative recovery.
